Whilst it is still winter, but hopefully not for too much longer, there are some things that we can do in the garden.  Yet we are all looking forward to welcoming spring very soon.

Our Tips for your Garden this February

Whilst we are still prone to frosts, don’t forget our feathered friends and if you have a compost in the garden, now is a good time to give it a good turn over.

Plant Care
If you have left your perennial plants since summer, then now is the time to cut them back.  This should be done as close to the base as possible and will improve their appearance/flowering when the new growth starts later this year.

If you have plants in beds and containers, then remove the leaves so that they do not rot and possibly cause disease.

If you have some hellebores in your garden, trim off the leaves to reveal the flowers.

Winter Pruning
You can prune back late flowering clematis hard. This is your last chance to plant bare-rooted raspberries. Prune the canes of summer-fruiting types to 10in after planting and autumn-fruiting varieties down to ground level.

Garden Beds
Prepare soil by adding lots of good fibrous compost.  Tender trees will be pleased of a generous application of dry mulch too to protect their roots.  Treat all soft fruits with well-rotted compost or manure.

Even if it does look too cold outside, those weeds will already be starting to make an appearance.  Clearing them now can stop them spreading seeds and it is always easier whilst they are small.

Practical Solutions
Even though the weather may not entice you out to sit in your garden, have you thought of the advantages of a veranda. During the winter months, a veranda can keep the rain and snow off your patio. This can enable easier access from your patio doors. A glass roof veranda can be used to cover outdoor furniture and barbeques also protecting them from the elements. Once the weather gets warmer, a glass roof veranda can transform a patio creating an ideal entertaining space. If you would like to see some examples of our glass roof verandas, please click here.
